Our Concern:
The spread of aquatic invasive species to Fence lake and to other lakes on the chain, is our concern. Several local lakes are already contaminated. The Clean Boats, Clean Waters watercraft inspection program is the front line defense against the spread of aquatic invasive species. Please consider becoming a CBCW Boat Monitor.
Did you know...
that in the United States there are more than 250 non-native Aquatic Species from other continents and over 450 non-natives within North America that have been moved outside their habitats!
Nearly every body of water in Wisconsin, and the surrounding states, has at least one type of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). Most have more than one. Some, like the Minocqua Chain, have nearly a dozen. Aquatic Invasive Species pose threats to ecosystems and their users by:
* Outcompeting with native species
* Changing and degrading our experience as users
* Requiring intensive maintenance and monitoring ($$$)
* Altering natural ecological processes.
Removal of an Aquatic Invasive Species is difficult and expensive to do. For example, once a population of Zebra Mussels is established, eradication is impossible.
Prevention is the best way to stop the spread of Invasive Species.
You can help several ways. Use the lake responsibly. Learn about the issues affecting the health of our lake and how to prevent the spread of AIS by attending one of the training sessions that are open to everyone. And, consider spending some time at the boat ramp monitoring/inspecting boats.
